Saito, Chiho さいとうちほ (1967 - )

Japanese mangaka

Saito, as a member of the manga artist collective Be-PaPas, is most famous for her creation of Revolutionary Girl Utena. Her art style is very heavily influenced by the Fabulous Year 24 Group, most notably, The Rose of Versailles. Revolutionary Girl Utena was serialized in Ciao from 1996-1997 and tells of the tomboy Utena Tenjou and her quest to find the "prince" who keeps sending her letters every year.

She made her debut in 1982 with the oneshot Ken to Mademoiselle (The Sword and the Mademoiselle) and has drawn over 30 series since then. Very little of her work has been licensed for English-speaking audiences, although a number of her titles have been published in Italy and other parts of mainland Europe.

In 1996, she received the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo for Kanon, a Japanese music manga  serialised by Shogakukan in Petit Comic from 1995 to 1997 and collected in six bound volumes.

Since the manga and anime were created almost simultaneously, each narrative has its arc and outcomes. Saito's manga deals with romance, melodrama, and the act of forbidden love.
