Ikeda, Riyoko 池田 理代子 (1947 - )

Japanese Mangaka and Opera singer

Included in the Year 24 Group, Ikeda was one of the most popular Japanese comic artists in the 1970s, becoming best known for The Rose of Versailles, (called Lady Oscar in Europe) which is loosely based on the French revolution and was originally serialized in Shueisha's shōjo manga magazine Margaret from 1972 to 1973

Ikeda has written and illustrated many shōjo manga, many of which are based on historical events, such as the French Revolution or the Russian Revolution. Her use of foreign settings and androgynous themes made The Rose of Versailles and Orpheus no Mado enormous successes.

Ikeda's Orpheus no Mado was collected in 18 bound volumes. The series takes place in Germany, Austria and Russia with the backdrop stories of the World War I and the Russian Revolution. The manga series was published by Shueisha, first in weekly Margaret from 1975 to 1976, then in monthly Seventeen from 1977 to 1981.

In 2008, she was awarded France's National Order of the Legion of Honor for her contributions to Japan's cultural awareness of France and received the medal of Chevalier from the French ambassador to Japan. She was also awarded the Japan Cartoonists Association Award of Excellence for her work on Orpheus no Mado in 1980.
